How long can you stay?

If you are asking about the notification of residency, that should be done within 90 days of arrival.
Any other paperwork? Who knows?
It would have helped if you had expanded upon your question, provided a few more details.

If you want to work in Malta then you need to start the paperwork when you arrive.

As a tourist you cannot work in Malta.

as an EU national you can stay as long as you like - its questionable whether an EU national really needs the residency here. It is an administrative measure at best..... as for work no work permit is required if an EU national and many do work here without official residency papers.... although it has to be said the same people who do arent payign tax or SSC and are regarded as the massive black labour market.

I received a tax number and social security number prior to my residency application being completed and both were taken from my wages. Apart from saving 1.10 on the bus fare (no longer the case) it really doesn't serve a purpose other than to record who is here. Or to obtain an e-id when applying for jobs online within the public service.

There must be other reasons for it of which i don't know but  toon and the gang will probably know.

I believe the EHIC is only valid for 'visits' of 90 days!

if you work and pay SSC and Tax you will get Maltas own healthcare system

Not sure why you say its questionable, its currently Maltese and EU law if you want to stay and work in Malta.

There is a huge black economy but its illegal !

I  dont believe that it is essential to have the "paperwork" to stay - in respect of the original question, of how long can one stay.

as for working am not saying nor am i condoning it but it happens daily whether its illegal or not.......

and since when has illegalities ever bothered anyone here....
