CBD is a vague concept. Living in the centre needn't be so expensive. If you are going to use the subway as your main means of transport, you can work out which lines or line will suit you and then work out which areas would suit you. There are some Beijing websites that advertise (Beijinger, City Weekend Beijing), though be warned that there are a lot of unreliable agents and landlords out there. Be careful of fake agents who offer attractive housing that doesn't exist, landlords that charge illegal agents fees, returnable deposits that are not returned, charges for rent receipts, demands for six months rent up front etc etc.
