Post new topic

Kirsty P

Hi there,

I am a new member so not really sure what i am doing yet!!!

Me and my husband are hoping to move to Malta next year.  I am very excited but worried we will not know anyone.  I've read about the expats club so will be definately going along to that.  We fly out in 6 weeks for an 11 day visit so i hope to meet people there!

Does anyone know where i can find school admin jobs?? I have looked but can't find anything!

I am happy to chat to anyone who wants to chat back!!  :-)

Hi Kirsty,

welcome to the forum.

Just come along to one of our Wednesday Expat meetings at Bianco's on Spinola Bay.

School administration jobs? Do you speak Maltese?  Otherwise it will be very difficult,if not impossible to find something in schooling.

Cheers
Ricky

Hi Ricky,

Thanks for the reply.  I speak no Maltese at the minute but i'm hoping to learn some basics!!!  I think when we move i will just look for general admin jobs.

Can i pick your brains a little more?!?!  Sorry if these questions sound a bit silly..

When we move we will have enough money to live on for 6 months, do you think that will be long enough to secure a job?  I have read mixed messages about employment.  I will (by then) be qualified in HR and my husband has worked in IT for many years (though he has no actual qualifications).

Also, will we need to have medical insurance or will it be free?

Thank you so much.

Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,

health coverage is not free unless you pay contributions but you should be able to transfer entitlement from the UK for a limited period or profit from the Reciprocal Health Agreement between Malta and the UK.

Without Maltese language (more than basic) you should concentrate on foreign companies for administration jobs although many of those also tend to look for Maltese speaking employees along English or other languages. There are a few call centers that focus on the UK.

What does your husband do in IT (without qualifications)? There is a large demand for experienced programmer, database specialists and so on in Malta. So he should be ok if his skills fit the market needs.

I can't really answer the question about money. It should be easy to secure a 'job' but the Maltese job market lives off low pay compared to most other EU countries unless you have the skills and qualifications to demand a decent salary.

BUt the sun comes free if you have the time to enjoy it.

Cheers
Ricky

He owned a computer shop here with his Dad where they repaired, built computers / laptops etc.  He now works as an ICT Network Manager in a school.  He has the experience but no degrees etc.

I think he may look into a few short courses just so he has something on paper!

I am very much looking forward to a life with more sun!  Thank you for your help.
