Myself and my husband are thinking about moving to Alicante with our 2 young children ages 6 & 4.
Please can anyone provide us with information about the following:
1. schooling & education
2. how easy it is to get jobs (my husband is a qualified heavy goods mechanic)
3. If Alicante is a safe environment for children
4. Your personal views/experinces of moving to Alicante

Please feedback, appreciate your time.

Thanks x

I don't have specific information about Alicante but Spanish schools tend to be better disciplinde than many UK Schools, particularly the smaller ones. I think the key will be finding the right place to live and then see which schools are within a sensible distance.

Regarding the job, I think it will depend on his grasp of Spanish, particularly related to his job. On the bright side -Compared to construction and service industries I think the job market is likely to have remained fairly string for his skills.

Hi,

Alicante city is a large place but Alicante is also an area and includes many places.

There are a number of things to do before you start to put your plans into place.

1. Start to learn Spanish -all of you.
2. Start looking for Companies who provide the jobs for your other half's work and either ring or write, it may take a long time if you write. Post on forums asking for work,
3. Go and visit, look around, go in the local bars ask about housing, schools, work. The local bars are a fountain of information.
4. Schools are good in the main, but are normally about 12 months behind UK, most only take in September and you will need to be registered as living in catchment and then register with the school. Few Spanish schools will talk to you in English, so your basic Spanish will get you some way to understanding what they need. Translators are plentiful at a cost, so you may have to take one with you.

The children will fit in with little problem if they are the sociable type, but if they are the cling on to mummy, then they may find it difficult as they may be the only child in the class who does not speak Spanish, but they will pick it up quickly and then they can teach you.

So, if you are thinking of making the move, then the start time is NOW with lots of research.

Good luck,
