HI...we are a married couple in our mid 50's and are thinking of coming to Malta to obtain an EU passport.  What do we need to do??? Do we need to rent a property or buy, for how much and for how long?  Can we be employed (currently wine /fruit farmers, but have vast exp in business).  what are the requirements, and if somebody has been through this experience we would love to hear from you, thanks

Hi

Unless you have family links to Malta, getting a Maltese passport is close to impossible

Howzit !

As mentioned in the earlier reply a passport via Malta is almost impossible. If you qualify, you may be able to get a permanent residence permit. After 5 years in the same EU country you would qualify for a long term resident permit. Which is then transferable to any other EU country.

Feel free to ask if you have more questions

There are countries in the EU where you can get citizenship and a passport after some years' residence.  Alas, as previous posters have said, Malta isn't one of them.

I believe (but do check) that it is possible to do this in Cyprus, which is a somewhat similar country (small, Mediterranean, English widely spoken), with something like 5-7 years' residence.

The residence requirement in Cyprus to apply for citizenship is residence for 8 years.

Residence in Cyprus is granted for employment or if you can show you are self-sufficient.

The employment regulations for third country nationals are basically the same in all EU Schengen countries ( permits granted for specialists and or no local or EU applicants available).

There is a long term residence program in Malta under which you have to have fulfill some (financial) clauses but under this scheme you are not allowed to work. That might be a way to go?

thanks all...we have had a major advertising campaign here on Malta, and that after a few months if you buy property...and can prove your financial support...then basically it takes a few months?????  Is there a site I can check this out on in Malta???

Ah, what you heard about is the permanent residency scheme which doesn't give you a Maltese passport (or Maltese Citizenship), but the right to live in Malta permanently
