What to do with 2,1bill dong?

Post new topic

crazybitch

I already have 1 bill dong at 8,1 interest rate at techcombank.
The plan was to put more money in a saving account in vn
But the interest rate has dropped dramatically, so i dont think thats an good idea anymore,
I guess the interestrate  will be at 7% or lower at the end of the year, so its there anypoint putting money in the bank?

Some newbs with an idea how to get profit of 2,1bill?

We all have our own investing strategies but right now I'd buy a mix of silver and gold. Precious metals are very low at the moment and I see it as a good opportunity, especially with high inflation around the corner.

It depends on how long you want to invest and how much risk you are ready to take.

Get profit of 2,1 bill after 1 day? 2 years or 5 years?
If 1 day, just go to casino :) high risk high return
If 2-3 years, setting up a small business may be a good choice, but still rather risky, and you must need a business idea for sure
If 5 years, go to the stock market. The market is in a good time now to join, the profit is now expected 10-15% per year. (depend on your portfolio)
If you have more money, you can also join the real estate market at this time. The price is relatively reasonable now.

If I were you, 50% in bank (8.1% is a relatively competitive saving interest you have been offered, trust me), 50% in the stock market. (Just personal opinion)

I have spent 30+ years in the finance industry and that is excellent advice from Huong Dao.  Actually 7-8% is an extremely high interest rate relative to the 0% you would earn in the US or most of Europe and the stock market in Vietnam is also good value, at least compared to the US and most of Southeast Asia.  The only thing I would add is that you could vary the split between the savings account and the stock market depending on your age.  If you are older (i.e. retired or nearly retired), you might put 60-70% in savings.  If you are younger, you should put 60-70% in the stock market for longer term growth--but don't sell on any market dips, just keep adding little by little over time.

Just a little supplement that you should have a good knowledge and careful research before entering the stock market. And that's not all, the most important thing is to know how to catch up with the market waves (though in fact this is really challenging as the stock market in Vietnam is unpredictable ;)).

To me, no need to do big thing to earn big profit. Beside bank saving, open a small cafeteria in a foreign visitors walking street (e.g. Pham Ngu Lao or Chu Van An st. in my Hue city :)) with the total investment around half a VND mil and you can reach the break-even point after 6-8 months. Think about it and gud luck :)

virgoks makes a good point about research and the market.  The best thing to do for a novice is just to invest in a broad-based fund with low costs.  For foreign investors there are ETFs (exchange traded funds) listed on both the US and UK stock markets which give exposure to a range of the larger stocks listed on the Vietnamese market.  For local investors there are local mutual funds.
