who is a vegan?

I always had this idea that all Buddhists were vegetarian. Do you remember that scene from ‘Seven years in Tibet’; the monks are doing construction to the palace and are shifting through the dirt to make sure all the bugs and insects are out? This was what I thought most Buddhists practiced.

I was a vegan for five years living in Canada. I had moved to China thinking everyone was Buddhist, being a vegan would be easy and most others would be also. I was really misinformed; very few people in China are vegetarians. Even in a Vegetarian dish, is prepared with a meat or fish broth.
I’m told that Buddhists have a choice to eat meat or not, but they must be offered the meat; they cannot kill an animal or buy the meat.
Tibet has some of the harshest terrain in the world, being over 4,500 meters above sea level with months of snow, ice and strong winds. It is amazing that so many Tibetan Buddhists can be vegetarian in a place where it is nearly impossible to grow a crop.

I think in China you're almost forced to become vegetarian or even vegan. A nicely prepared Chinese meat dish is always good, but the meat is often mad poorly butchered and I see no improvements. Not to mention animal husbandry. However, the 10% meat, rest veggies etc. is a pretty nice mixture

I'm vegetarian & moving to China in 2 weeks. I fully expect massive weight loss. My Chinese teacher long ago warned me that the chinese concept of vegetarian is pulling the chunks of meat out of the food. I will be eating a lot of plain rice/homecooked stuff!
