Hello,

My husband and I are thinking about moving to India within a few years and I am looking for any advice from current expats living in India.  I have lots of questions, but have listed a few below.  Would greatly appreciate any advice you can give!!

I was born in Pakistan but have been living in the US for most of my life - meet my husband here (he is a black american) and we have a 2 year old son.

1) Ofcourse we will try to move where the economy/jobs take us but any suggestions on particular cities in India that might be more suitable?

2) We have a 2 year old son - any suggestions on montessori schools and/or other private schools?

3) Cost of living in India??  Apt, school, groceries, utilities, travel, etc.

4) Any info on obtaining visas/work visas??

5) I have been reading that foreigners can not buy property in India - is that true?

Thank you for the advice!

Hi Nausheen
What a pleasant surprise I have a friend Nausheen in Sydney also from Pakistan. I dont think I can help u much with ur questions but being foreign nantionals I reckon Indian Laws dont allow to buy properties. Living in Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai should be better for expats as these cities have more to offer and comparatively peaceful and enjoyable. cost of living is personal but mind well India is not anymore cheaper to live.

Good luck and cheers

Hi Nausheen,

Nice to know, you have shown interest in India to relocate to in recent future. Though my question to you is .. would it be a long term stay or a stort term stay, as in a project work for an year or two ?

Its true that outsiders can not buy any property for their initial years in India, however it is possible to avail good property on rent and may be after an year or so, buy it accordingly.

For visa, I am sure your local advisers will help you out with what type of visa you looking for if its a long stay here in India.

As Sudheer has mentioned, cities like Bangaluru Mumbai and Pune would be good for you guys, as they offer many good things along with peaceful life. Though I must not forget that every indivisual here comes with different dreams and eventually gets settled with the comforts offered by the city itself ! Guess this would help you to decide place thingi .. !

Hope my lines would help you a bit to make some positive decision,

should you have any queries, feel free to write to me ...

Expecting new guests in my City, all the best !

cheers,

Omie.

Omie,
This would be a long term stay.  We do not have jobs lined up yet in India but my husband works in business and I am in clinical research.  Anyhow, yes it is long term (at least 4-5 years) and longer if we settle in well.

I will do more research on the places you mentioned - thank you for the information - it is helpful.
