A few years ago I was tasked to scout the area south of the Cam Ranh Airport as well as the bay area and neighboring Ninh Thuan province. The goals were to find spots where a beach resort/hotel could be established on an unspoiled beach with white sand and pristine, crystal clear water.
After first doing some google earth reconnaissance I contacted the local Authorities in Phan Rang and arranged a trip along the construction site of the coastal road (which is now open to the public).
There were some truly breathtaking places there and I went for test swims, snorkeling and climbed around to take photos.
While the waters were really beautiful, unfortunately it seemed that dynamite fishing has killed of all the reefs around there, so I had to tick the box “not suitable for diving/snorkeling”.
The two beaches I found the most beautiful are called “Binh Tien Beach” and “Vịnh Vĩnh Hy Bay”.
At Binh Tien it seemed as the construction of a mega resort had came to a halt (the Binh Tien Intercontinental Casino & Resort). The Vinh Vinh Hy Bay is quite nice, though it had a bit too much Vodka on the menus for my taste. One resort was under construction there too.
I can recommend to anyone to go and visit these places to see it before it gets spoiled. However, I would only spend a days trip or maximum one night since there’s nothing to do and not too much to see.
Anyway, while I did see some beaches which seemed potentially suitable for a beach resort, I had to finally file my report and state that this entire beach stretch is an absolute no-go for any investors.
I came to this conclusion after doing a more in-depth research on the area. To my amazement, the local authorities in Phan Rang/Ninh Thuan are intending/hoping to develop the province into an environmental friendly holiday destination with a lot of nature and natural reserve areas where tourists can go hiking and so on. Then came the shock, they said “it will even have 2 nuclear reactors here very soon, so tourists can enjoy the view of modern technology next to paradise beaches”…
Obviously I can’t tell any investor that it is potentially a prosperous location if 2 and maybe even a third NPP will be built there soon.
Nevertheless, the article in today's papers brought back memories and I thought I’d share with y’all.

Here you go HBMax, might even be room for your yacht marina? ( and a factory to produce sidecars? )
How about this resort in Vinh Hy Bay?

I thought investors will invest in such a high quality resort only if it's a fruitful business there.
Anw, thanks snake77 for interesting thread.

I have been to a few not so well know beaches too.
And I tell nobody their location.
Because I want them to stay not well known.

here you can see 2 photos I took in 2011 when that resort was under construction. As mentioned above, even if the sea looks beautiful, there is no fish or underwater life to see there. Corals are all dead. I'd never build a resort there and I am not sure if they were aware that 2-3 NPP's are planned within less than 20km from their location...

Ahh, you think so. Guess in a way you're right. We've been scouting beaches for 20 years now so that folks like you could come here and spoil the whole place... quote: "I have been living in Viet Nam for over 12 years and speak Viet fluently. The first few years I traveled the country extensively and visited all the historical landmarks and tourist destinations. "
not sure which category that falls into as of spoiling the country but in a way I'm glad you came here and "helped" build up the country by spending your money at all these "tourist destinations" which were once not spoiled, dung kg ha, hieu chua???
Out of this topic but I'm wondering why many gentle men in this forum, who are smart, nice & friendly (cause he takes time to post for people to read), have hot temper?
Sometimes some of you scared me out though I know you're not rude people by reading your posts.

I hear you and understand your point. Heck I still feel sorry for what happened to Mui Ne you know. When I first made it there, it was only a dirt road with fisher families, nouc mam barrels under palm trees and a 20km long empty beach! I never told anyone. So can’t blame me but then this French guy came and set up his Coco Beach Resort. 2-3 years later the road was paved and another additional 3 resort had been built. And now, the whole damn place is “spoiled” (while bringing jobs to thousands of people)…
But I guess we all have to face reality. Things change! With more and more people poring into the country it is impossible to keep “secrets”. Just think, back then we saw 5 or 6 planes touch down a day, usually only half full. You flew over rice paddies until you touched down! The airport terminal was only ground level, the today’s international terminal was only built around 2000 or so. Or the Highway 1 A, right after you crossed the Saigon bridge, which still had a rail riddled with bullet holes from the “liberation”, it was a wide one-lane paved road from the Ha Tien/Thu Duc cement factory till the former Long Binh base, after that it was a narrow one-lane paved road all the way up to Hue! And now? It is a huge multi lane highway and seemingly ever growing (to transport all the millions of tourists to “spoil” these once secret beaches and other places).
However, I try to see it positive, the locals have been struggling for years and as with Mui Ne, in Phan Rang and many other places, people are hoping we all spread the word that there are “secret” beaches there and that finally foreigners start to bring some revenue to them too.
Besides, one should expect that with a new coastal road, there will anyway be no point in trying to keep things “unknown”. I just find it sad that it will all be “upgraded” with nuclear power plants, now that’s what I called spoiled…
So here we go, some more info on the “unknown/ soon to be spoiled beaches of Ninh Thuan”

Not sure, maybe they're just frustrated, bored or just have nothing to contribute?

They are not even close to being in the same category. There is a big difference between visiting an established tourist destination and creating one out of an unpopulated, pristine beach. It's sad I even have to explain that.

That's what makes this site worth visiting, instead of the same boring old farts, repetitively posting their vast knowledge, ( 90% internet sourced ). Some people definitely do no like to be proved wrong, and some don't appear to like other people knowing as much, or heaven forbid, MORE than them.
While we are on the subject of resorts, etc, here's some lighter material. A few would apply to VN? ( especially No2, definitely not No7 though ).
THESE ARE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED BY "THOMAS COOK VACATIONS" FROM DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS:
1. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts."
2. "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time -- this should be banned."
3. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food."
4. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price."
5. "The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room."
6. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow."
7. "They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax."
8. "No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared."
9. "Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers."
10. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish."
11. "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun."
12. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair."
13. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller."
14. "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service."
15. "When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners."
16. "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning."
17. "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel."
18. "I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes."
19. "My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

I think you’re getting the facts a bit wrong here. Firstly, if a coastal road is being built, what impact do you expect it will have to that area and should the huge investment not bring some revenue in return? Secondly, if you take into account that the population of what you call unpopulated places has nearly no sources of income, then I think it is fair enough that they get their share too or would you prefer to keep them in stone-age like conditions?
Furthermore, what can you do to improve things when you find “pristine beaches” which have been dynamite fished for decades? I think the best way is to give the locals a new source of income, educate them about the consequences and offer them alternatives.
Btw, put it how you want, no need to explain me anything, it is just a bit odd when you say there’s a difference between visiting “established tourist destinations” and creating one. What does the word “established” say, perhaps that at once there was nothing and then something got created?
It is called progress and development, and it is vital to most of the people in this country that it continues to develop, sometimes 2 steps forward 1 step backward, I know...
How much of a say do these locals actually get in these developments, SFA, I'll bet , and the ones that do agree, probably have many second thoughts about it later, ( many local Govt officials are paid huge bribes top " sway " and speed up the paperwork , etc ), . not everyone is greedy, and wants to live a decadent Western lifestyle, full of commitments and obligations, and the burden of having to keep up with the " Jones's "..
Many locals have their cost of living increased due to the result of these developments, and young people cannot afford land to build a house on anymore. They probably make little more than they would farming this land, but get carried away with a good cash offer to sell, not really considering the future , and inflation, etc..
