Hi There! I'm Jack a UK/Maltese passport holder!

And my partner and I are moving to Malta! But i have a very big question, we're both 23 and have around 9000euro's in savings to make the move, initially staying with my extended family then branching off renting our own place.

My partner has a Tefl Course and is a UK National and hopes to teach English.

I've been reading through the

http://homeaffairs.gov.mt/en/MHAS-Infor … dence.aspx

And am at a bit of a loss as to which would be suitable for my partner to apply through. I spoke to the Maltese House In London and was told it would be quite simple for my partner to obtain and Id card to work and open a bank account.

Does anyone have any clear answers how my partner would be able to obtain residency and a Id card? I mean Durable relationship is quite a stretch as we've lived long distance due to work commitments and have not jointly rented a home, we have a joint bank account but thats about it? Shall we get married would that make our lives easier?

Any advice from anyone who can assist will have a bottle of wine on me!

Thank you Kindly.

As your partner is from the UK they have the right to live and work in any Eu country .. if they are planning to work they can come here look for a job and then apply for residency once they have gotten the job .(3months)
or they can come here and apply for residency based on their relationship with you  (form f) they would need to provide proof of relationship , the joint bank account could be used to show such a relationship - as long as it has been 2 years worth , it just says you need documentary evidence to prove the relationship over 2 years .
( they dont give id cards to foregin nationals now only E-residence cards , having said that this may be different in your case as i notice your already a citizen of malta im sure someone else will come along and tell you )

Bank account -vary depending on the bank , the day, the person you speak too but -once you have a job, contract of employment you can go in and usually open an account fairly easily . you can open an account before but they will apply for a reference from you current bank this costs about 10 pounds and they are checking to see if you have been with the bank 2 years .

Obiously if they are married to you then a marriage certificate can prove a relationship -however not sure that's the most romantic reason to marry though - I used my marriage certificate as i applied via form f

hope you get all the answers your looking for and all the best

When you say 3 months to find a job, what happens after 3 months? Will my partner have to leave?

robpw2

no they will have to apply for residency after 3 months its more of an administration exercise  if they  don't have work by then your partner can just apply as a member of the family using form f , its what i did

Its easier to apply with employment because i know you mentioned you may not have sufficient proof that you have been a couple

Thanks!

I will hope my family can assist when we're there! We've had our joint account about a year.  Im sure im worrying too much as employment will be the gateway.

That in mind if we're renting but unemployed 3 months they couldn't deport or anything!

ricky

Unless the partner is non-EU they can't deport anyway !

The partner clause is really only of interest for couples EU/non-EU who are not married!

If the partner of an EU citizen is non-EU and residency for the non-EU famiily member'  is being applied for under this option the authorities are very strict! The only safe way in Malta is that the partners have to have been legal residents in Malta under the same address for more than 2 years. All other options are subject to major discussions and discression by the director of the department.

Cheers
Ricky
