I recently met a girl from Ghana and she claims to live in Accra, how can I check to make sure that it is not a scam that you read so much about. we have talked about my going to Ghana to visit her in Accra but I would like to do some investigating first. Can someone help me with some sound advise on who I can contact to get background info that this person is who she says she is?

I have also been in contact with someone there and it is almost impossible to find out information. I have tried to get in touch with the british embassy and several other organazations with no success. they never respond, would be interested if you have any luck , keep in touch.

I think it would be very difficult to find out if someone actually exists. If she gives you a physical address I suppose you could get someone living here to go and see if there is such a place but so many houses don't actually have a street number.
I think you only have to worry if she is asking for money. If she just wants to be a girlfriend and chat and text then you can continue the relationship and then come and visit and find out for yourself.

Hi!
This is an old thread but still needs to seen by many. Even a physical address is not enough. Scammers are sharp and they would just organise a "family" and "neighbours".

My advice is to make as many friends as possible in Accra before arriving. Not people that you meet through your partner to be and not those who are actively trying to contact you for various reasons online.

Why not arrive a week or two earlier (without letting the person know) and make sure that you get to know places and people.
Tell the person "today i am going to see an old friend by myself" and check the reaction. Do leave the house and don´t announce it too long in advance so that they can organise someone to follow you. Any nervousness or talk about  Accra/Ghana being a dangerous place and that you should not move around on your own should make the alarm clock ring.

Is your friend avoiding to meet your other friends? Making up strange stories that they tell you or your friends? If he/she says that he/she is Ghanaian check if they understand certain languages. Twi in Accra for instance. If they speak hausa and claim to be Ghanaian is it with a Ghanaian accent? As you understand you need people around you to be able to check all these things and please listen to their advice.
Love scams are the most difficult ones because the victims often don´t listen to a good advice.

Good luck!
