Expat Mums in Accra

Post new topic

Miss T77

Hello I'm looking for information from Mums already in Accra.  My husband has been offered a position for 2-3 yrs & we are now weighing up all possibilities.  My queries are around family life.  We are from Australia with a 21 month old daughter & do not know much other than what we can find on google & therefore are finding it hard to IMAGINE what life is like.

1)Where is the best place to live with a small child ?

2)The whole Malaria subject has me panicked. I am going to go to the travel doctor here in Brisbane but I would like to know from fellow Mums their practical experiences.  We plan on extending our family as well so am aware that I cannot take the medication or my daughter due to her age.  Having said all that - I don't actually want to take the medicine at all but prepared to take it for the first few months if I am not pregnant.  Are their areas in Accra where it is more controlled for example...?

3)Has anyone experienced childbirth in Accra ? our other possibility is to fly back to Holland (where my husband is from) to have the baby.

4)Activities - are there many organized activities amoungst the expat groups and are their any especially catered to children ?  Is there a good mothers group ?

5)Is there any reason for not being able to keep up my independent lifestyle ?

6)My daughter suffers from Anaphylaxis (allergic to dairy & egg) - she requires an epipen etc.  I rely heavily on the labelling in the shops on ingredients & tend to cook all her food from scratch. What are the supplies & availability like of specialised food ? proper labelling.

I'll leave it there as I have many more questions but am very interested in hearing what fellow Mums have to say.

Thank you for taking the time to answer all my queries.  I appreciate it very much.

Tia

Not a mum but have a friend from Australia who has two small children here.
If your husband has been offered a job then I assume that it will have housing and you will probably live in one of the areas where there are a lot of expats. The houses will have flywire and aircon etc. Of course you will still have to take precautions for malaria but use of cream will probably be sufficient. Some people have the areas around their houses sprayed on a regular basis which will keep the mosquitos down.
Some people have given birth here and I think if there are no complications there are some good private hospitals.
I'm sure you will find lots of things for your child to do and lots of other mothers to meet and socialise with.
You will be able to buy all the things you are used to here - except vegemite! - so don't worry about food and labelling.
I hope someone who had experienced motherhood here will also reply.
I am sure you will enjoy Ghana if you decide to come.

Thank you for yor reply.  It's been a big help !! I'm really hoping to gain a great family experience from this. How has your Aussie Mum found settling in with small children ??
Thanks

She has lived here for some time with her Ghanaian husband. She seems to be finding life OK for her and her family.
