Based on your introduction, your interest are water sports and ChiangMai is far from sea.

Bangkok; Phuket; Pattaya; koh Samui; khon kaen have Expat community too.

Everyone taste is different for retirees.

You need to move around first before deciding. Most cities have cinemas and shopping centers.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

Some guys like to sit in a bar to drink even before noon.

See and experience yourself as your interest is vague.

vague?? Please read my post.. I was asking about top 3 YOUR choice of towns..not if it would be a fit for me.. look for some commonality with replies.

I know where Chaing Mai is... like my post states..its just a center of operation to explore.

What is your short list  - about 3 towns - of your favorite place to LIVE in Thailand? Of course your needs and wants will be different than mine, or maybe not...

FYI about me: Single, retired male, active, I like windsurfing, snorkeling and Olympic size swimming pools. I also like old things..buildings..culture. Of course I also like low pollution, good infrastructure and be able to enjoy a movie or live entertainment once in a while.  Cheers.

1. Prachuap Khiri Khan(city).

2. Kanchanaburi.

3. The mountains in Phetchabun/Loei Provinces- choose your own city.
