Is it easy to use the local rail?

Hello,

I am planning to visit Japan in 1st 2 weeks of April on holiday. The first week i will be with Japanese students i met when i last visited NZ. Is it easy to use the local rail?? subways? I do not know any japanese..lol

I'm not sure about the smaller cities, but in the big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya (and their surroundings), the train stations have ticket machines, maps, signs, etc. in both Japanese and English.
