Buying a car in Japan

Hi,

To be able to move in Japan, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Japan: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

I purchased a car from a used car lot.  I found a car I liked and payed cash for it the same day, afterward I had to wait two days for the dealer to complete the registration and obtain the license plate.  I purchased insurance using a company called Japan Insurance NET (was able to complete the process by phone and e-mail), they have English speaking staff so it was very easy.  Renting a parking space near your apartment can be expensive but overall the processes of buying a car is relatively easy.

PS
When choosing a car keep in mind that larger cars (white license plate) have considerably higher taxes than smaller K cars (yellow license plate).
