Hi Guy's
Seems to be a lot of drama applying for Residency in Vanuatu.
I already have land there, and would like to bring a container in with building materials and furniture,
can this be done without being a resident and paying the heavy duties as it's for my own home, not a business
i can not find answers anywhere
any help would be much appreciated

Getting residency is not difficult.  You would apply under the land owner/investor category.  You need to provide proof of income and ownership of property.  Application will take approximately 12 days to process at Immigration.
As far as I know you must be a resident to bring in a container tax free.  Use a reputable company and they will do all the paperwork for you.

I can refer you to a reputable local who can process the paperwork for you. It's to difficult to try and do remotely. randyvanuatu@gmail.com
