Malaysia can be quite a terrific place i you love dogs. There are many dog lovers who work relentlessly to save dogs lives, foster and rehoming as well as running shelters for dogs.None of these are from great big NGO's,its all done by volunteers. We use or free time and our own funds to save animals. Slowly but surely the laws are changing too and harsh penalties for animal abuse is implemented. There are dog friendly condos, cafes, restaurants, a large number of pet shops, groomers, trainers, acupuncture specialist, psychologist and vets. I write this as I see a load of rubbish painting a terrible picture of Malaysia and Dogs on the forums . So please if you love pets and would like to move to Malaysia or already in Malaysia, contact me on PM as I'd like to help you with your queries.

spe

There are also Dog Friendly Hotels and Resorts

if your knowledge could help many of our members, could you please share your experience with us on the forum, or in the expat guide ?

... or are you only willing to promote your professional activity, which is not allowed on the forum ?

We are interested in bringing our dog out to KL with us once we have settled into our jobs out there.. How are kennel facilities and are there quite a few?and also, even though it's a long way off ..is it difficult to then get your dog back Into the uk on return?

spe

Yes there are kennel facilities as Boarding, yes there are a few. If you are really keen I would give you the contact of the person providing the handling of dogs locations (i saw it somewhere once). Many dogs have accompanied expats and local dogs adopted in Malaysia have relocated with their new expat families. Its all done professionally.
Disclaimer : Pls know that I dont charge for any of this nor get comissions.(lol) We just dont know what others may think of these days

@ spe > It would be best if you can recommend your contact in the business directory > https://www.expat.com/en/business/asia/ … la-lumpur/

Thanks

We are moving to malaysia in the next 6 months.  Would really appreciate some info on which areas that are dog friendly.  I have a mid sized crossed male dog.  I know we will need to rent a house with some garden space but a condo is out of the question.

My four legged kid is part of my family so he practically comes with us to restaurants, cafes, pubs.  But it will be restricted in Malaysia, that I know.  Question :  is there a dog park that is safe?  Walking trails in nature parks that will be dog tolerant!

Many thanks on your input and advice.

Gravitas

Desa Park City is a residential area close to KL City which is dog friendly and has open spaces for dogs to exercise.

I had just read on the other posts regarding my issues.  Will do some research on the area you mentioned.  Thanks

Lemon Grass, it depends where you choose to reside. If you live somewhere like Setia Eco park they are a purpose built dog park for residents (non residents can join for a small fee). This park is enclosed, dogs can run free and have a lake to swim in, meet other dogs).
Malaysia is NOT dog friendly as it is an Islamic country and your dog will not be welcomed in restuarants, schools, public transport, etc, he/she will have to stay home. Therefore you must rent a house with some yard space for it to run around in.
From which country are you moving? You will have to ensure you follow all the Department of Vetinary Services (Ministry of Agriculture) guidelines to bring in your dog. I brought my dog from the UK and Malaysia has a special arrangement whereby the British vet does all the checkups, produces the necessary documentation and the dog can be picked up on arrival with no quarantine.
Dogs and cats from the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei and Singapore are not subject to quarantine provided the pets are healthy and all documents are in order. Dogs and cats from other countries are subject to a minimum of 7 days quarantine.
Check the link and arrangements with your country. http://www.dvs.gov.my/en/faq-import-haiwan-kesayangan

Hi Goldencik
Thanks for the reply.  Will google the area.
We are moving from Spain.  I believe there is no way around the 7 days quarantine.  Thanks for your advice.  Will speak to my relocation agents regarding documents.
We have thought about it, a house with a garden is what we need!
One more question..... If there's a choice , Penang or Kuala Lumpur?

Gravitas

Lemongrass - Penang would be a better choice for sure. As long as its living on Penang Island and not the mainland area. (Penang is a State)

Our first preference was Penang, Tanjung Tokong.  Based on what I have read from blogs and the Penang forum, it has a dog friendly environment, which is always the top priority for us.
Now, we have sort of given some consideration to KL as well.  But it has a higher cost of living, of course.  Got to put on the thinking cap.  It is still in the same country at least!

Gravitas

Lemongrass - I personally think the climate is better in Penang. There is less pollution because the Klang Valley tends to keep the air from moving away. Having said that Penang does also have Haze from time to time (this year it has been much better in KL though). Penang is only about 2 hrs from the Thai border and access to high quality beaches. There is also a ferry to Langkawi from Penang.

A lot depends on your plans and how you are going to stay in Malaysia. If you are on MM2H buying property in Penang is a far better deal. In Selangor the minimum purchase price for foreigners is RM2 million in most places and RM1 million in WP/KL. I think its 2 properties of RM500k still  in Penang. Will check it out now cos things change always.

Yes still the same

Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated!

You are welcome - in fact I think I may start to live there for longer periods of time - I used to visit at least once a month up to a year ago and realise I miss a lot of what is on offer and the relaxed atmosphere. So thank you too, for reminding me.

Hi all,

This is the first up-to-date post I've seen about bringing pets to Malaysia. I have a small maltese and we may have to relocate to Subang Jaya in January. We've travelled before to a predominantly Muslim country and it was not pleasant for her or for me. However, the idea of leaving her with someone for two years is just too painful. Does anyone know dog friendly places in Subang Jaya? It is dog friendly enough? Will I be limited in doing many things if I bring her? Would much appreciate your advice etc. Thanks everyone.

Gravitas

Being up to date is not the point - the rules don't change. But if you choose to live in an area which is predominantly more Chinese, then you may find more acceptance.

Mas_harty
