Hi,

I received an offer from renowned IT company of Malaysia. I even received hard copy of offer letter with other documents required for immigration. I signed them and sent back to the company in Malaysia. After it I just received reply from hiring HR that they have proceeded the documents for stage 1 approval. But from past 15 days have not got any reply. Can you please suggest how much time stage 1 approval take?

The first stage is when the company formation is vetted to check if they have permission to hire foreigners and how many. It also goes to a specialist Committee to decide on whether the proposed hire is not taking a job from locally available talent, etc. If the company does not send in the right documents or there are queries, this stage can be prolonged. I think the Committee meets a couple of times a month. We also have a long weekend here (which also means the whole of this week has been affected by absences). It is impossible to say how long it will take, but up to 1 month is quite common (it has been known to take up to 3 months).

Stage 2 is when the company is given permission to offer the job to a foreigner and immigration then processes the application for a calling visa i.e. permission to enter Malaysia to take up the job. This is sent to the nearest Malaysian High Commission or Consultate. This will take about 2 weeks.

The employment pass is entered into the passport after arrival in Malaysia and takes 1-7 working days, depending how it is done e.g. with a runner, by the company officials themselves, by courier and collected, etc.

If I could add a summary - its not the easiest thing integrating into a Malaysian workplace and enjoying one's time in Malaysia. Unless its an opportunity of a lifetime, be careful to consider the potential problems such as high taxation and enormous bureaucracy that you will enter. Its not for the fainthearted or disorganised individual to work here. If you have a spouse, they will need to resign themselves to not finding work. Schooling for children is high as there is no access to government schooling. So although the salary may look attractive, there are hidden costs at every turn. Young, single, guys its a different story.
