The coastal city of Manta has developed into a commercial center with a population of over 217,000 (2010 census).  It is the largest seaport in Ecuador.

Major industries include fishing and tuna canning, and the manufacture of such products as cleaning supplies and margarine.

Water sports including scuba and surfing are popular in Manta, and it hosted the 2004 World Cup Bodyboarding competition.

Each year in September, Manta hosts an international film festival.

Technically, Eloy Alfaro Airport outside Manta is international.

However, two of the three airlines serving the airport provide Quito-Manta domestic service.

The only foreign city served by the third airline is Barcelona, a port city in Venezuela.
