Post new topic

Hello; I'm living in Mexico City now but I used to live in U.S. for ten years.
Curiously nobody wants to tell me where americans reunite here and when I finally see somebody American and I try to open a conversation, they ignore me. Come on guys, I speak English very well, I became a U.S. citizen and my family lives in Arizona and Texas.
Why all of you are sooooooooooooo scared to talk to someone in Mexico?
I am not even from Mexico!

Hi there,

Try checking out Mexpat or Internations...they have monthly get togethers where people from all over meet up.

Hello Afa,

To be in touch with your country fellow men, you could also view the American expatriates network in Mexico.

There are some groups that meet that I've seen advertised, mostly religious based.  Maybe check with the US embassy to see if there are any meet ups.

I see a lot of Canadians posting on a Canadian ex-pat site that propose meet ups in DF...must be more out there for Americans.

I routinely help organize get togethers for ex-pat teachers in the city, and while they aren't exclusive to teachers, networks I'm involved in tend to only reach teachers.  I guess it depends on how you connect and with whom.

Hello Afa:  There are LOTS of U.S. and Canadian folks in D.F., just as there are in many other places throughout Mexico.  They may be suspicious of a "stranger" (someone they don't already know very well), as we're all conditioned from childhood to avoid talking with "strangers."

Well, not even Mexicans talk to other Mexicans on the street in my experience mostly due to the fact that there is just so much insecurity and stress living in D.F. If you are lonely maybe it would be helpful if you got in contact with your family by Skype or something until you form some real relationships with people through common interests. Good luck.

I found that as a general rule American looking or Canadian looking people do not like to talk to strangers in any city in Mexico [San Miguel De Allende the worst for this, they have dozens of tourist buses a week stopping there]. One reason is they seem to be tired of telling others about the local conditions or are tourists themselves and as you mentioned wary of strangers who approach them. It appears mostly tourists are overly friendly but the local vendors and store employees, even bus drivers, seem to recognize me just after a visit to their place and are even chatting me up a bit. I like to be around locals and they are very polite when you are shopping. I stay in San Luis Potosi most of the time and second in Mexicali. Regards Alan
