First thing is to see if you qualify for a visa. Both countries have a skill list, so if you have a specialist skill that is on the list then you will have preference for getting a visa if you satisfy all the application criteria.

The best way to secure yourself a job is to just come to NZ with a work permit and simply start door knocking. That shows that you've got initiative and not afraid to go the extra mile. Although many Kiwi's claim they can't find a job, I have met many foreigners who got themselves a job within a week by just using that technique. If you plan to wait for a job offer you better give up on this idea, as Kiwi employers prefer hiring Kiwi employees.
Be aware that NZ is very, very expensive and that it might be near to impossible to find yourself reasonably priced accommodation in places like Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch. Aussie might be a better option.

Hallo Stefan, my son secured a job as a electrician in New Zealand  whilst living in the UK, it was a mixed blessing as his new company in NZ said they would supply accommodation for him as part of the employment package, it was a wooden shed with no water/toilet facilities in the middle of winter!, They call them sleepouts down here although he soon organised his own accomodation, so beware getting a job in NZ over the phone/internet.  He moved on asap and now works on high voltage lines. The average NZ business tends to prefer employing Kiwis which is only natural but make no mistake they will wring every pound of flesh  from immigrant employees. Until the immigrant employee wises up and either demands a pay rise or once he/she has been here 2 years, they can move on to better jobs etc.
My other son is a IT worker who came here with the intention of getting a job here but did not have a work visa and the number of companies that interviewed him then turned him down because he had no work permit is unbelievable, Eventually after 6 months trying he got a job down on the south island, after 2 years working for them he applied for a full visa and he was asked by the immigration people why he was being paid so low for his job position, Immigration contacted the company he worked for and they had to give him a 10000 dollar a year pay rise.! True.! So Stefan be aware there are many pitfalls in getting a job here  but once you have overcome them it is a good place to live.
