Crude Oil Crisis! Strikes! Volcano Emergency! What's Next? El Niño!

Post new topic

If you follow weather trends, you know that this year, 2015, is an El Niño year.

Historically, El Niño peaks in December.  In fact, El Niño is named after the Christ child for this reason.  December is now only about three months away.

According to Bloomberg Business, local forecasters are now predicting a more severe El Niño than the one in the late 90s when about half of Ecuador's agricultural harvest was destroyed.

Heavier-than-normal rainfall in the first half of 2015 has already damaged half of EC's cocoa trees, according to the Ecuadorian cocoa exporters association.

Multiple reports from the EC Coast on Expat-posting websites say there will be an emergency preparedness meeting this Saturday, September 5th (2015), in the coastal fishing village of Olón.

More details from an Expat.com Ecuador member who is currently on the coast are in Report 1 of the thread at this link...

Both Cotopaxi and El Niño may be discussed.

Please assist the Ecuador forum by posting on this matter only at the "El Niño 2015" thread instead of this thread.

That will streamline folks' ability to get out important news about El Niño for members without anyone having to chase multiple threads.

As this is potentially a major health and safety issue, your cooperation will be appreciated.

Now would be a very good time if you live on, or close to the beaches, to do a risk assessment…….
In traveling along the beaches here, you see evidence of falling walls, houses, pools; all in a loosing battle to the sea……at least from my observations, it is not uncommon…….then we have low lying areas……..it would seem a sure bet there will be flooding problems at some point….problems you can mitigate or prevent, by acting now…….
Flooding is common here even without El Nino…….
IF you are unsure, or have questions about this, now would be a good time to reach out to those on this forum who can better assess potential problems, and make suggestions……..

Even without the El Nino, there are problems…….if this is half as bad as they are forecasting…..it is time to act.
