Hi,

While living abroad, some expats wish to get involved in the local community life.

What organizations expats can turn to if they want to volunteer in Malta?

How to join a charitable institution, what are the steps?

Which causes have the greatest need for volunteers in Malta?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and advice,

Maximilien

I volunteer with the Red Cross Refugee Support Services and Island Sanctuary (for dogs). For both of these it was very easy to join. The island Sanctuary said 'We are desperate' and welcomed me whenever I could get to Marsaxlokk, and the Red Cross required a police check after I contacted them via email and met with the team leader.
Both great experiences so far!

One of the disadvantages of Maltese living is that very few homes have gardens; so people who have developed a love of gardening in other countries sometimes miss the pleasures of working peacefully with plants, shrubs and trees. The University of Malta operates a botanical garden at the Argotti Gardens in Floriana, quite close to the central bus station of Valletta. Other expats are volunteering to work there, establishing seedlings, working in the greenhouses and potting sheds and generally helping to green and beautify Malta. There is a strong and ongoing need for volunteers, as the gardens change with every season, and the work of gardeners is never finished. Just call in and ask one of the permanent staff how you can help.

One of the first things that struck me when I moved to Malta was the abundance of stray & neglected animals, especially dogs that are left in garages, outhouses & roof terraces.
These dogs never seemed to get walked or socialised & sometimes get handed over to the sanctuaries to look after as the owners seem to find them too much trouble.
My wife & I decided to do what we could to help so volunteer everyday before work & at weekends to help & try to make a small difference to their lives by walking, talking & just generally helping out with the day to day running of the sanctuary.
There are a number of sanctuaries on the island, but we live in Mellieha so Noahs Ark is where we volunteer.
We have adopted 2 of their dogs also, who join us everyday there for excercise & fun!
It is very fulfilling & heartbreaking at the same time, sometimes a thick skin is required.
All the sanctuaries get very little assistance financially & rely heavily on volunteers & public donations to survive - we love what we do & get back a thousand fold when we see a neglected or abused dog get the help & care it needs & starts trusting humans again!!

There's also CSAF [Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines} who are based in the south and desperate for volunteers. You can find their them on facebook. They do a fantastic job with the little help they get so if you can spare even an hour or two every now and then I'm sure they'd be delighted. You can contact them by sending a message on facebook.

We are desperately in need of experience bottle feeders and foster homes for cats/kittens until they are homed if you can spare a small room for a few wks at one time please go to Fosterers and Bottle Feeders needed for cats and dogs and join us its on fb it's deperate now and very short on volunteers hence most kittens and cats can not be rescued from a cruel life on the streets unless we get more volunteers thankyou

I started about six weeks ago teaching English at one of the centres in Hal Far. I do one session a week, 17.00 - 1900. I find it interesting and enjoyable.

If anyone is interested in aircraft and aviation I would think the Malta Aviation Society would be more than happy to welcome you.
They always need volunteers during the airshow period of course, which is this coming weekend, but through the year they have lots of interesting things going on including restoration.
It does involve you becoming a member, joining fee of 5 Euros, not sure about the annual membership.

Have a look at what they are about - Malta Aviation Soc.
