Hunting - Boar

One of the common things in France and Italy is hunting boar.  In Kent England they are now having problems with escaped wild boar who are breeding and also mixing with the ordinary pig stock so they have to cull them.

Up here in the highlands the deer breed so sucessfully that they definately need culling quite a bit.  We have no boar, bear etc although they are trying to reintroduce wolves.  We also have great sea and and river fishing.

Is there hunting for boar and deer in Bulgaria, I expect there is plenty of fishing.  I am particularly intrested in hunting boar which normally needs a gun that can fire a single heavy round.  They also tend to be a dangerous nuisance if you come across them or corner them.

I expect there is strict gun control but is there provision for gun ownwership by resident non-nationals and do you require hunting permits.

I should clarify this, boar are a great source of excellent meat, they are also apart from a danger to walkers, hikers and residents in remote areas a cause of problems to farmers and small holders digging up root crops etc.

Unchecked they can become a dangerous nuisance and being attacked or gored by a wild boar (I've seen the results first hand) is not an experience anyone wants.  If they get amoungst domestic pigs and interbreed you get even more problems and problems with disease etc.

So it's a double edged question really, control of a species that can get out of control very easily and a bit of self suffiency as two or three boar will feed a small village for a week or so.

Yes, there are hunting groups here in BG, and it is common hunting wild boar, but they are not as common any more due to the hunting and the farmers. Folks do go hunting for deers, wild ducks and other types of birds. Do not ask me, cause I am against hunting wild life in BG, hardly anything is done to renew it at all.

Yes, there is gun control and there are provisions to obtain different types of guns & permits, but I am not that familiar with those. Here is a link that explains what is required to obtain a permit to bare arms: http://www.lawsbg.com/proceduri/956-raz … rujie.html Again, no english translation, but I guess google will do good enough job.

Thankyou for that.  Here we have to cull the deer due to the damage they inflict on the forests and especially tree bark in the winter months.  They can kill off trees at an alarming rate.

It's the rutting season and driving cautiously between two villages the other Sunday we had to come to a halt amoungst about 300 to 400 does and stags that had all crept out of the forests at dusk.

The so called deer fence was pointless and had been trampled down by the stags trying to get to the does that had crept along a river bed for grazing.

The funny thing was seeing dotted amoungst this sea of deer the odd cow or horse quietly grazing alongside them. It makes marvellous photography but the land just cannot sustain them and the result is starving, diseased deer and aborted fawns.

They are sadly victims of their own sucess.

No worries of that happening in Bulgaria. In BG deers are getting close to extinction due to over hunting and not enough done for them to breed and protect. There are poachers that will go hunting even during the off season time, unfortunately. Land is enough to sustain them, if they would stop hunting them.

Hunting boar is quite common where we live in Bulgaria. You see hunters out most weekends during the season and always in packs. We were told that stalking or hunting on your own is not allowed.
