Hi guys,
I'm Turkish  man, English teacher and Trainer. I'd like to move to Indonesia in 6 months. I need your advice on one subject. How does it feel like to be English trainer in Indonesia in terms of living cost, socialization and security?

Thank you for your worthy thoughts,

with best,
FURKAN

Hi Furkan,

You will probably find it difficult, if not impossible to find a job here in Indonesia teaching English.  Those jobs primarily require that the teacher be native born from an English speaking country such as the US. USA, Canada or Australia.

Moreover, competition for those jobs is generally intense since teaching English is among the very few jobs that younger foreigners can get here.

It is going to be pretty much the same feeling as any other job in terms of living cost, socialization and security. It depends where you decide to live and work. But salaries as a teacher can vary a lot.

Most English teachers are nationals of English speaking countries who's mother tongue is English and they manage fine. But since you are Turkish then you might find it difficult getting an English teaching job a there are regulations that decide who can become an English teacher and they usually mean you need to be a native English speaker.

If Indonesia is not possible maybe you could consider Malaysia.

Normally I would agree, but there could be a possibility, maybe in a Turkish school.
Give these people a call.

In the event of getting a job there are anywhere else, make very sure you have an IMTA work permit and KITAS.

Contrary to other opinions, you actually can teach English in Indonesia but maybe u can't have it as a main job. As the other opinions said because you are not from an English speaking country.

But I know some expats living in Indonesia teaching English as a freelance job - so you cannot make it a living. Some language institutions don't mind if you are not a native speaker - even when your native accent is very strong but your English is fluent. Sometimes they need you to perform a presentation when they are having an event.

Some  institutions don't mind if you get arrested.

He might very well find work in a specialist school that requires Turkish language, but there is no legal way he can work as an English teacher in the normal way because there is a short list of  countries, and Turkey isn't on it.

As for freelance, what visa type, and do you think he'll get a work permit?
