Hi there, I'm planning to come to Indonesia for 3 to 4 months to work on some personal project ( focus on study) .. I need information about the accommodation and Internet access. How to look for a good price in a safe place?
Thanks in advance

Ubudian

Anywhere you stay in Bali would be considered a safe place, but I guess it would be fair to say that some places are a bit safer than others.  For example, because of its non stop party atmosphere, Kuta would be considered less safe than other areas in the southern part of Bali.  And of course Kuta would not be the best place to focus on studies anyway.

For that you should be looking to places like Ubud, the central highlands and the east coast…the east coast in particular if you want to be near the sea.  These areas are more quiet and peaceful.  The north coast (Lovina) would also be suitable for you, and again, it’s near the sea.

Accommodations are plentiful in most all areas of Bali, and these days, WiFi is found most everywhere.  While surely not the fastest, by and large, internet connection speeds are more than acceptable these days.  Prices and types of accommodations run the whole spectrum of as little as $5.00 a night for a home stay (internet needs to be confirmed), to over $1,000.00 a night for luxury five star resorts.

This being primarily an expat forum, you might have a look at travel forums for Bali, such as Virtual Tourist, Thorn Tree, the Bali Travel Forum for up to date feedback and suggestions of specific places to stay.  You also might look at the Lonely Planet guide to Bali for suggestions regarding places to stay.  On the Trip Advisor web site you can check current reviews of Bali hotels and resorts, bungalows and even some home stays, as well as most all restaurants.

As for your visa, you should apply for a 60 day visit visa at the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate to where you are currently living.  That visa can be renewed up to four times, each time allowing for an additional thirty days and without having to leave Indonesia.   That is the most suitable visa for an intended three or four month stay.

Have a great visit!

Hi Cancer,
How are u bro.? Are u looking specifically in Bali?

Cancer14

HI Salem, not necessarily. I want a quit place with reasonable price, safe, and has access to internet. it doesn't matter which city I will be  :)

Ubudian

With that in mind, you might want to reconsider re-posting under the title, Accommodation in Indonesia.  Your initial post was titled "Accommodation in Bali."

You're likely to get a whole lot more potential input, but do keep in mind, this is a vast country, so some preference would be helpful.   ;)

There goes all the big cities and tourist areas.
Consider somewhere like Purwokerto or similar smaller towns, they're all busy enough to have fair (not fast) internet, but prices are far lower than the cities.
As long as it has a train station for ease of long distance travel, you'll be fine.

Hi Cancer, i would suggest for you Jogjakarta, its the most suitable city for students. Safe, quite and cheap living expenses.
Its a city with lots of universities....

Hi fred! Powerkerto where is that.? Are u kidding, he is stranger he need a place with miumum living standards,,,,

Dude, Purwokerto is a lovely town, one I know really well after living there for a year.
Modern estates, easy shopping and road/rail links to pretty much anywhere on Java, including Jogja.
It also has what is probably the best Papa Ron's pizza in Indonesia, their chicken BBQ pizza being nothing short of fantastic.

Edit - It also has a couple of universities that accept foreign students.

Salem_SBY

I've never been to Purwokerto either but my wife has been there. So based on what I've heard I too would also definitely recommend Jogjakarta. Solo is another alternative if Jogjakarta is too "busy".

Fred

I spent a year in Purwokerto so I can speak with some authority on the town.
It's quiet, not too quiet, and has very few tourists.
It does have a night life (limited), and it has some very nice restaurants.
Several large supermarkets keep you in essentials, but rents are still reasonable, starting at 10 million/year for a cheaper house in an old estate.

Salem_SBY

Well.....sounds like a great place then  ;)

But I'd still prefer to recommend Jogjakarta or Solo or somewhere in Bali say in the North. I mean what's the point of living in a very mediocre place. It would be better to at least try to live somewhere beautiful when you have the whole of Indonesia to choose from.

By the way Fred, what were you doing living in Purwokerto for a year? It's kinda the opposite type of place from where you live now.

Fred

We lived in Wonosobo for a few years, but my wife fancied moving to somewhere a little busier, so we moved.
That town is a very short drive from a lot of really beautiful places, but is still very cheap.
I must insist on suggesting it would be a good place to study or work.
We've been thinking of moving back.

Salem_SBY

Dear Fred, i totally agree with you, but my point is, for a new comer, . Prefered to reside in a major city. Coz the small towns are really localish, expats will be kinda isolated there.
Btw i stay in Tangsel too !! Alam sutera. How abt u fred..?

Fred, I'm sure Wonosobo and Purwokerto are lovely places. Sounds like a perfect place for a single man to spend 3 - 4 months working on a study project. Rather him than me though  ;)

Fred

I'm not knocking Jogja or Solo, both are nice places, but I still prefer Purwokerto to live.
"Isolated" depends on the person, not their status in Indonesia.
I found absolutely no trouble finding friends there, and I still visit them when time allows.

Salem_SBY

As I said, I've never been to Purwokerto but it sounds fine. If the OP would like to live there then that's fine. You should introduce the town so that he can appreciate it better.

Indonesia is actually full of many interesting and beautiful places that would make great places to spend a few months. I also like Bukittinggi very much, been there a few times, lots of amazing scenery, history and friendly people, not to mention great Padang food. Probably I would choose a place like that even more than Jogjakarta.

But if I was him then I'd probably go for Bali, as long as I could find a cheap place to live and somewhere out of town then I'd say you can't beat Bali.

Fred

Lombok is amazing.
The town has a reasonable level of shopping and a KFC, and the beaches are close to the town.
I could easily do a few months there for study, but I'm unsure of the state of the internet.

Ubudian

In Bali, one could take a longer lease with a Balinese family and live in their compound for up to a year for around US$10 a day (more or less) and that would include meals and WiFi, as these days, more and more compounds are "wired."

There must be other areas in Indonesia where this is also possible.

While Bali is no longer the "backpacker" haven that was once extolled by Lonely Planet, the fact remains that for those willing to do their homework, very affordable living can still be found here.

Dirk, don’t you think that your message offering your place in Canggu should have been sent via private message?

Beyond the forum rules disallowing public forum posts being used to promote private businesses, I take this a step further, in that when foreign expats use this forum to promote their business…it somehow seems worse to me, than when Indonesians do the same…IMHO.

Just a thought…

Airbnb is a good way to find cheap accommodation with Internet. I recommend to contact the owner to confirm the internet speed before booking. You can also browse on a real estate agency like Bali Radar Property or Paradise Property Group.

You must know that fast speed internet is available in every Hotel but many area in Bali doesn't have it yet. Telkomsel and other ISP are working hard to implement Fiber Optic Internet in many areas.

For accommodation try http://www.rumah123.com/
For internet access TRI offers sim cards with 6 Gb for around 100.000 to 200.000 (you can buy them in RTC, the computer center, jl. Diponogoro in Denpasar)

Ubudian

For long stays like three, four or more months I would not suggest that you book anything in Bali via the internet.  It's amazing how beautiful some properties can look in a jpeg as opposed to seeing it in person.

It's always preferable to make your booking once here and able to personally inspect the place and its environs.  Plus, actually being here, cash in hand, always lends itself to a strong bargaining position.
