Environmental protection in Egypt

Hi,

Environmental protection is a challenging issue for all the countries around the world. Would you say this issue is deemed of significance in Egypt?

Is the country going green through initiatives like waste management and selective sorting programs, renewable energies, public transport, green awareness campaigns and so forth?

How do you personally commit to improve the environment in your daily life?

We would greatly appreciate if you could tell us more about the various local initiatives for sustainable development in Egypt.

Many thanks in advance!

The government doesn't do the real efforts to activate the policies ,however there are a few factories recycling the garbage as this is their business.

IMO this is a major issue in Egypt. The government should make this a priority. They should be looking at solar energy and waste management far more thoroughly. There are some small private initiatives popping up here and there but it's not near enough. It also hurts me to say that there are issues within the culture severely holding Egypt back in waste management. People seem to think it's perfectly normal to dump trash anywhere away from their own establishments. This seems to be more of an issue with businesses rather than with residents although if you behind many flats you will bascially see a landfill of rubbish due to people throwing crap out of their windows. The government not being more stern with this kind of behaviour doesn't help and with them not providing proper means of waste management just compounds the problems. The people of Egypt are very able and can be willing but they need organisation, motivation and means from their government.

My first recommendation would be to ban the plastic bags. I see this as one of the biggest problems here. Myself I shop with a basket and buggy

Considering the limited resources available to Egypt, along with the volatile nature of the Middle East, clearly, Egypt is doing relatively well.

God bless Egypt.

No, I don't believe this country is doing hardly anything with the garbage to stay green. We barely have trash bins in the street for the garbage and it's not sorted. The plastic men come around to dig in the garbage then it's all over the ground again.  I know El Gouna is sorting their trash and their town is so much cleaner, not a lot of air pollution as there are no taxis just tok toks. I think Cairo is horribly dirty and in need of a better system. When I was living there, I could never find a place to throw my water bottles, candy wrappers, food wrappers etc when I was out on the street. Very frustrating when it's against everything you believe to throw it in the street like most do.  If El Gouna can enforce a clean living environment, why can't Cairo and towns?  Where I come from you are fined $300 for throwing trash even out of a car window!!!! If this country wants to bring in more revenue and keep it clean, then they need to impose and ENFORCE laws to keep it clean!

I save my big water bottles and then when they are empty, I slice around the upper top area so I can open and close the whole bottle and I fill it with smashed up smaller bottles. I can get about 10 bottles in it and it's so much easier for the plastic collectors to pick up as well.  I try to do my part in staying green here, but it's a challenge.

I don't think it's accurate to say Egypt has limited resources. The resources just have not been put to proper use and the profits from them have not been invested back into the country and its people.
