Hi all,

If you had to look back on your expat experience in Latvia, would you heartily say "let’s do it again"?

From the preparation stage to your actual everyday life in your new country, what did you enjoy the most?

Would you do certain things differently? Could you tell us why?

How would you describe the benefits of your expatriation in Latvia so far?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience. We look forward to hearing from you!

I really enjoyed living in Latvia. It´s a great country with lots of beautiful landscape. Riga is a pretty little city with great atmosphere. Latvia is becoming more and more western as the shadow of the soviet times. There are more and more people who can speak English and a lot of things are in the stores that were not there just 5 or 10 years ago. The winters ca bne very harsh so be prepared for snow and cold. Overall, I think Latvia is a great expat experience.

I am from the USA, and find Latvia a wonderful, charming, and  even at times a very romantic city. I tried living here for (several months) but in the end , had to go back to the USA...it is difficult, my wife is from Latvia, loves it here, has a large family and business, and doesn't want to live in America (full time) !!!  it's a dilemma !!!

I know exactly what you are up against. My wife is Latvian too but I am an English Baronet. We came here to build a house. On final part now after three years of being bitten to death my mosquito and frozen to death in Siberian winters. Finally a house to ward off the elements is nearing completion but inside i still need to go home to my own house in England. Dilema always but something has to give in to stay here.It is far cheaper in all respects and I am free to do all i want. So dear sir the way is yours to do what ever you want. Mind you I am not poor or do I need a job ,no. If yours is yes stay in USA as nothing like a job with real wage is here.Outside Riga that main city no chance unless a builder or plumber. I have used most and all are busy people. The plumbers not cheap and have to be watched.Best plan is wait for retirement and then return.

Hello Naesby,
Thanks for your comments. I understand perfectly as well....I am a semi-retired business man, living in USA and have "dacha" near Riga. My wife likes it in USA, but misses the family so very much, I love her, so hate to see her hurt !!! it is my dear friend what we call a "vicious cycle" !!  Peace and happiness to you.

I see your plight dear sir. Yes retired myself at 50 so there we are two business men wanting different things. I was a solicitor for my sins. England was my love but here I am not always happy but i am getting there slowly. Just created a proper croquet field on the last bit of garden designed in landscape. lake next year as found spring today. Grass cutting 5 hours of it.just stopped for a sharp intake of breath and a cold beer. We have six acre to play with here and alongside building the garden I built the house too. Never do this before so brownie points from her indoors. Cant be bad so may be we will settle down in our old age.One wishes you hope as your elections bother the known world so I bet a sensible chap like you is dreading the thought of Clinton or Trump running USA into the dirt. War monger Trump who lost all his fathers London business. Trump Towers and the courts. Clinton with her Bill beside her .What a scandal he was. She took millions in bribes from Arabs in persona. Not much hope in that bundle but God knows I wish you well. Maybe cheaper Latvia ,which is lawless ,may suit better in that light of day? If so look me up in Liepupe near the sea.

Its not a vicious cycle its called logic and common sense !!   Visit Riga stay for sometime and go home , the reason why so many Latvians live and work abroad !!
