Validating Visa visit - March 2011

Hi all, we will be visiting Melbourne in March 2011 to validate our Visa. It will be literally a 'flying' visit as we will be moving in August 2011. Can anyone advise on a 'cheap but nice' place to stay for two adults and a stroppy teenager! We will be on a fact finding mission to find the nicer areas to live / schools etc so, again, if anyone can help with the good and bad we would really appreciate it.
