only once I had to exchange a couple of dollars and I did it directly at HSBC exchange machine at the airport. But as I have heard FEXSERV is supposed to be number one address for money exchange.

For a few hundred pounds it really doesn't matter much - just go to any high street bank branch that's the closest to you.

Yes, banks have differences in their exchange rates but the difference between a 'good rate' and a 'bad rate' would be about 1 euro (literally).

Just avoid random street vendors / currency exchange kiosks, as those may indeed charge exorbitant rates.
