Your best business development ideas in Germany

Hi everyone,

As a foreign entrepreneur, launching a business in Germany is a fantastic project and an exciting challenge. Some ideas are likely to succeed. Some others are promising but may not work as well as intended.

In your opinion, what kind of business or industry is likely to succeed in Germany? What kind of industry or service currently unavailable or underdeveloped in the country would meet local needs?

On the other hand, what are the most common business types foreign entrepreneurs would be eager to launch in the country but with very little chance of success?

Thank you for your insights.

Germany has a lot of red tape (bureaucratic hindrances) and sometimes onerous regulations for certain types of businesses. Before you start anything do VERY THOROUGH research about what you need to work in that field legally!

Examples:
- Many professions require (Germany recognised) certification (e.g. a degree or "Meister" title) in that field. This applies to most skilled crafts (from hairdresser to cook to bricklayer) and many others.
- Some professions have fixed fees, so you cannot legally undercut others on price. This applies to architects, lawyers, medical doctors and similar.
- Many rules regarding safety and hygiene must be followed, e.g. when dealing with foodstuff (incl. restaurants). Also, not every business can be run in all places - e.g. there are rules about noise and people traffic in residential areas.
- Any business must be properly registered with the authorities and required licensed must be present. Furthermore, rules about bookkeeping and documentation must be followed. This will require an external accountant/tax consultant if you are not German native speaker.

All these rules result in distorted (or less) competition in many areas, which means there are good business opportunities if one finds the right niche and does the work properly.

Starting a business requires 150% dedication and effort, not only in Germany but anywhere, really.
If you want to do it only half-heartedly or part-time, you will not succeed and should probably not even start.
Also, you should definitely check first whether your visa, work permit and employment contract allow running a side business in your free time. In most cases it is not allowed!

Good Morning!

As I said, you should check if your visa binds you to one employer or allows work for others as well.
Even more important, you must ask your main employer for permission (if possible in writing) for doing other work on the side. If you don't do that, they can fire you!
