Bringing pet goldfish - no donŽt laugh.....

Post new topic

lucyanya

I know this may seem like a really stupid question..... but they are my speciality.

My kids have two pet goldfish and would like to bring them to Malta with them.  Are there any special regulations regarding this, as they are just a couple of VERY VERY lucky fairground fish?

Thanks chaps.

:rolleyes::D

I can ask for you at work tomorrow. Just so happens I'm a marine biologist, and one of my coworkers works with imports of exotic fish ;-)

lucyanya

Thats fantastic.  Thanks loads.

Here's what my coworker says -
- don't feed you fish for two days,
- put them each in a professional fish packing bag (find a pet shop)
- use water from aquarium
- 1/3 water + 2/3 oxygen gas (from pet shop)
- put it in a styrafoam box, ship live cargo
- he doesn't think you'll need any extra forms (not an exotic import). However, if you PM me he knows someone who can help you directly (who imports fish)
- you'll have to check your fish as they are more than 100 ml, so this might be costly as you'll have to check them 'live cargo' - ask your airline for details.

Hiya,

Thanks for the info,  if they come it will be with us on the ferry.  Are the rules different for this?

Cheers

Oh that's much easier. As far as my colleague knows there are no limitations on bringing goldfish to Malta. They are not an endangered nor invasive species ;-)

lucyanya

So does that mean if we just package them carefully, (padded envelope  hehe) we don't need to do anything apart from put them in the car.....

Thanks

Believe so.

lucyanya

Thank you soooooo much for your help.  The kids will be really happy we don't have to rehome them.

At the same time, Malta is a bizarre place where small-minded people make up laws. I wouldn't mention the fish to the border guard, in case he/she decided to make a fuss.

lucyanya

Excellent,  thank you and thank your friend for their help.

Another box ticked...   the more I tick, the more boxes I seem to get..

Just had a thought... where can I get some very small goldfish bowls.  I'll need two, then I can wear the fish for the journey as earrings.....xx:D:D
