What is the process for renting out property in Hungary?

Hi all,

Has anyone recently rented out their property (within the last 3 years), such as an apartment or village home, and if so, what was the process? Does the process involve a lot of paperwork and not worth it? or is it just a case of filling out a tax paper and/or registration paper of some sort to get a tax code and then you just do a yearly tax return?

Thanks in advance

This is both a national regulated and locally regulated issue. Go to your local government office to ask for what is required for both national regulations and local regulations and taxes.

Generically, you have to register you are renting your property. And you have to pay the nationally required, but locally determined, "overnight" tax for each person that stays at your property. You also, depending on local regulations, may need to get approval to rent (i.e. to show you have all the basic requirements to rent your property).

It is not difficult. It just requires a bit of paperwork.

However, income from such rentals is another can of worms. For that, you should talk to an accountant. It is complicated (for example, if you run it as a business, you may need to pre-pay monthly income tax estimates).
