Agent Fees

Hi I'm currently looking for a 2plus bedroom residence in the Lo Pagan/Santiago de la Ribera area. This afternoon I was taken by an agent to see two properties. He told me that it was one month's rental as deposit, which I was expecting, one month's rental in advance, also expected but that i would need to pay him half a month's rent as his fee. Is this right? I thought the owner of the property would pay the agent/agency!
thanks

I remember paying an agent fee when I first moved to Barcelona. I do not remember how much but I know it was expensive. My experience wasn't a very pleasant one, as when a fuse burnt out the person servicing the part demanded that I pay, and I was not reimbursed by the owner. The owner, an elderly woman, inventoried everything in the apartment. When I realized that there were items that could break easily and could be claimed as worth a lot of money, I asked her to remove all breakable and valuable items as I had small kids in the apartment. There were some problems leaving as well. From that point on, my family moved back to the US, and I found student apartments to rent. If you are working or at a university you can find apartment through friends or the University. That worked well for me.

You're getting away lightly. It's standard that the agent gets a month's rent as their fee you pay the rent for the month's rent and another month's worth as a deposit against damage to the property. So, normally, you end up paying three months rent in one go
