Car for cross continent driving

I've been kicking around the idea of buying a car in either Europe or Eastern Russia so I can drive from one end to the other. I haven't done this before and a conversation on what needs to be considered and done would be great.

I did the North/South version a long time ago in an un-modified Land Rover Safari; first time I ever got bed-sores driving a car! More recently, we (wife decided to join in this time, but point-blank refused to consider another Land Rover), so did the re-run in a Skoda Superb saloon; we chose it as it had a lot of space inside it so not need a roof-rack, was a comfortable drive; the car performed well and no aches at the end.

I've just got the 4WD Superb estate; part of the decision process in choosing the car was trying something similar in a few years time, but maybe a bit more adventurous.
