Why is it that when Lunar New Year comes along but it seems to happen anytime that the yellow dogs (Viet Police) happen to stop you for reasons beyond belief and fleece you of your money! They stop you, threaten to take your motorbike ask for 2 million VND get stroppy and then become angry. Seems its a way to get you to plead with them and start to negogiate. I eventually gave hime a small sum of 200,000 vnd as thats all I had and told him I was a UK citizen and had insurance. This type of corruption has to stop otherwise the country will continue to be seen as corrupt all over. I suspect the 200,000 vnd will go to buy some beers for him and his fellow yellow dogs ! Chuc Mung Nam Moi Mr Policeman !
You have insurance? Very good, but do you have a VN licence, which is the only valid licence in VN?

If you haven't done anything wrong then you don's have to complaint like that.
The cop must have been a bit short of money for Tet.
I have a right to post my views police dont have a right to get money and put in their pocket !
Personally I like to pay tee money and I never get stopped in the city, but outside is another matter.. but there the only reason is speed.. they say speed kills, but im sure it's the sudden stop that gets you
"I have a right to post my views police dont have a right to get money and put in their pocket !"
Yes they do... ..it's the Vietnam rule of law!
They have no law here to do that.... fact! Tell me which government law and its reference ?
"They have no law here to do that.... fact! Tell me which government law and its reference ?"
Sheese!!!
The original (Latin) meaning of "Sin" was like the
inept archer; to 'miss the point'...
John Cleese might help you with the meaning of life stuff...
I think you don't have to care about that anymore, if you don't feel comfortable living in Vietnam, then you should go back to your country and live in there. But in Vietnam the police's just a one case there's a lots case's around here. You or me cannot change the Vietnamese policy's System.
Its the unfairness of the lot gaining money by deception.... not exactly good is it ?
More to the point is that if you cannot change your mindset
..you have been brainwashed...
Open the door to your mind before opening it to the world
so you're saying they just stopped you without reason and asked for 2 million? did you have to show them your registration.. licence..?
Police apologists here for a change, wtf? Sometimes a fine is deserved, doesn't excuse the police from being dirtballs. Ever seen someone get a ticket for driving the wrong way? or on the sidewalk endangering people? or speeding in the city? or recklessly? I haven't. Ever seen a crew of men in yellow NOT just hiding around corners harassing the major lawbreakers, the ones who fail to use turn indicators, and helmet-forgetters? Looking for the easy fines in the shade, not making the streets safer.
Vietnamese, especially poor Vietnamese, live in fear of the police. Threats to impound motorbikes to coerce. Sure 200.000d is trivial "coffee money" to a westerner but is a couple days Vietnamese pay for harassment. Let's say you make $50k in your western country. Two days equivalent pay is $400 for a turn signal. Ask a Vietnamese what they think about the police, you will hear stories.

Vietnamese policy, you're kidding, damn expats write some dumb things.
Hm....guess that's part of lives in Vietnam.
If you got stop, you can chose to let them take away the moto.
If you think it's a hassle to claim it back, then you have to pay for it.
If you think the whole system is messy, then chose not to ride. There are many other mode of transport. Isn't it simple?
We are in Vietnam, making our living here. If that's the way of live, either you follow it or you can chose to leave the country. Why condemned?
Remember you are making USD here in this country, respect their way of life and the people.
Nobody likes to be address as a dog...these policeman have good and bad as well.
If they are dog, what are you? If you are so right, y still give 200,000 vnd? Stand your ground!
Gave already and come to Expat.com and cry calling them dogs! You should have called them dog in front of thém!

From October 2015, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are accepted in Vietnam. You may only drive the category of vehicle for which your permit is valid. You’ll need to show both the IDP and your original driving licence to the authorities as required. If you don’t have an IDP and you want to drive a car or motorcycle you’ll need to get a Vietnamese driving licence from the Hanoi Department of Public Works and Transportation (telephone: +84 4 3843 5325) or the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Works and Transportation (telephone: +84 8 3829 0451 or 0452).
You should also ensure you have third-party insurance as required by Vietnamese law.
If you drive without the correct documents you risk having problems with the police, which you might be able to smooth over with 10$,(but remember you are breaking the law) instead drive without a valid licence in the UK, Australia etc, you would be charged and heavily fined. Chill out!
Even worse?
There is a 'demerit point' system in Austra-liar.
Most minor traffic offences attract A$300 + 3 points off the
total of 9 allowed before you must 'show cause'
(not to lose licence) AND you can choose to pay the fine
in small fortnightly repayments. So no one really worries
about the money side...
A$300 translates to (approx.) VND 5.2 million.
A (low) average wage in Australia is approx. $1,000:00,
so the 200,000 Dong is going to worry me..? (A$10:00)
It certainly does for the ordinary Viet Nam worker.
But both sides are correct: 2 million is extortion,
so stand your ground. The 200,000 is 'coffee money', so
pay your way... If you are an Expat; you are a target...
(As if) You didn't know that...
