How to manage malaria risk for a 2 year old

Post new topic

Hi there,

We are potentially relocating to Nairobi later this year with our 2 year old. I'm very concerned about the risk of our toddler contracting malaria -- how do you manage the risk? Are your children taking anti malaria medication continuously? Do you have any advice or suggestions?

Thanks :)

Hello,

I think that you are worrying unnecessarily.  We have lived in Kenya with our granddaughter since she was 4 months old.  She has never taken anti malarial medication and has never contracted malaria.

The incidence of malaria in Nairobi is fairly low, due to the city being at an altitude of around 6000ft.

However the best way to manage the risk is to close windows and doors at dusk, to keep mosquitoes out.  Use a net over the bed and check inside it for mosquitoes when you put your child to bed.  If you go out after dusk, wear long sleeved clothes and consider insect repellant.  There are also products with which you can spray the room a couple of hours before bedtime.

Anti malaria medication is not well tolerated for long periods......for any of you. The conservative measures described are far better - for your whole family.

You tend to get told, in the west that the risk of malaria is high across the country.  In reality, there are regional variations, with the risk being at its highest at the coast and Lake Victoria, for example.  Much of central Kenya is at high altitude, which reduces the risk.
