Hi Bob,
Thanks so much- I did find your post with this info after realizing how this works (a novice techy lol). We’re definitely checking out the North Coast (Las Terrenas -> Puerto P). Will connect with you just prior to coming. Thx again for clarifying starting the process in one’s home country.
Cheers,
Wendy

Bob K

You are welcome.
Feel free to post other questions you may have in a separate thread as this one is just for introductions.

Hola!
My name is Judith. I am from Boston, MA. This is my second long term stay in Cabarete. I  am a Master Laser sailor who first came to Cabarete in 2009 to train at the Laser Training Center. For those who aren't familiar with it's great wind and big waves Cabarete has been for many years, the preeminent location for Laser sailing in the world. In 2015 I spent the winter here coaching Master and Olympic level sailors. Cabarete is where my heart is so I am back this winter to sail and work remotely on my graphic design business. I was supposed to be here only until the end of January but a week in decided a longer term was needed so am staying until mid February. Hopefully the remote work effort will be successful so I can plan some more visits of longer duration. Boston is just getting to crowded and cold right now BRRRR!

Welcoe. Lasers are great sensitve speedsters, Congrats on your status!

Bob K

Welcome.  Once  you are hooked it is hard to go back.  Good luck

Welcome to expat.com Judith. I remember the frigid cold days in Massachusetts. I'm glad I moved to the DR 13 years ago.

Hi All,
We have just moved to Punta Cana in December from Ontario for the winter till April 30, but planning to stay. My husband has a job here, so we rented out our house back in Canada. This way we can go back if things don't work out. BUT we so love it here, we don't want to go back.
We have rented a place through Airbnb till then, but now looking to either Cap Cana or stay in Punta Cana. Anyone know any good agents that deal in nice rentals.
Looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom.
Love to hear from anyone in the Punta Cana area
Cheers
Kim

Hello,

I am going back in a few months and I would like to be in contact with Canadian established in DR.
I am in real estate in Canada, and I am wondering about the possibility to invest, work, own a business in DR. I am not yet retired.
Any Canadian married to DR man?
Thank you in advance!

planner

Welcome to the forums. I am Canadian with 14 years here. I will private message you.

First I will say start reading the forums, tons of info here. Ask your questions and open new threads as needed.

Bob K

Kimby welcome.  Sorry I live on the north coast so can't really help you on the real estate issue.  Good luck

Bob K

Bob K

Myosotis welcome.  Lots here for you to read.  Starting a business and working here can be a difficult project but can be done.  Lots of hoops to jump through.

Bob K

Myosotis1

Thank you Bob!

I will read. But I get the idea that if you are not retired and need to earn a living there, it's a challenge.

Thanks again, I will surely get back to you.

Bob K

True.  Working here to make a living is not easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi all.
Hoping to visit dr in dec-March 2018/19.
We are retired and hoping to try it out. Will rent for now. Who knows in the future. We are a couple in mid 50s.
We don’t know where to look for rental. We want fairly safe, access to stores for shopping, restaurants and beach. Require a pool. Clean. Prefer walking distance for most as we won’t have a car. Will cab when needed.
We tried merida Mexico for a year but would like to try dr now.
Any suggestions appreciated.

A few days from 78? I will be hitting the big, scary 60 when we visit in February. We can share birthday Presidentes!  And, if I can find any, some quipe. I looove quipe.

Bob K

Sweeperman welcome. Lots of different areas in the DR to look at.
Cabarete on the north coast may fit your needs with everything you are wanting.  Punta Cana is NOT what you are looking for
Others will be posting on other areas as well.  Good luck and "trying the place out" first is an excellent idea.

Welcome to the forums! Lots of great info here on the forums. Please start reading and ask your questions as needed!

For the old timers - this is the Introduction and welcome forum! Please stick to that. Tinker - your long rambling post, while interesting, was deleted. Not in this thread!!!

Sweeperman

Thanks for the welcome.  We are just starting to investigate where and I appreciate the direction/ suggestion. But why not Punta Cana?  Not disagreeing, just wondering why no for that area. Thanks

abreuimmigration

Welcome to the expat.com sweeperman.

The north coast has several locations where you can get by on foot with occasional taxis or motor taxis.

planner

I will start a thread on this so as to not use this thread.

Sweeperman

Great. I am a little stunned with tech so it took me a few days just to figure how to post. Will try to get the hang of it

planner

Thread created!

Sweeperman

Ok. Not sure what a thread it but I take it that this is where I am to talk and ask questions.
Thanks again Bob Aubrey and planner.
I am all over moving there full time and enjoying. My wife is much more reserved.
We moved to Merida Mexico for one year. My wife found it too hot, 44c and 90 % humidity often. Not on the coast so no breeze. I was able to deal with it though I found it oppressive too sometimes. Margie was overwhelmed. Too hot.
We had to return to Care  for her mother (who has now since passed away) and she is unwilling to return to Mexico.
I am hoping the climate is better suited to us here as we both enjoy the heat, just not the blast furnace .😎
So any insight or tips you are willing to share are appreciated and I will try to figure how to find the threads that are here but elusive 😜

Thanks for your kindness and hope to chat more soon.

This thread is for introductions and welcome.  We keep conversation to the other threads so we keep this clean!   :D

Alas ! i don't know which one you mean.  I get lost sometimes & just keep on writing. I apologize to those to whom I may have wasted your time with unrelated claptrap. Shall pay more attention to the appropiate  (sp) headers in the future.

Hello all,

My name is Clint. I hope I'm doing this correctly. My wife and I would like to relocate to Santo Domingo in the next few years. We come down every year to volunteer with an organization that works with at-risk children in a few villages/bateys. We hope to retire early and buy a reasonable apartment in the city. Fortunately we have made a few friends who are native and I expect they will be a huge asset in helping us settle in and navigate the system.

I like some of the info I have seen on here. I discovered it trying to get estimations on the cost of living so I can set a reasonable budget. I hope to find threads on some of my questions such as health insurance, property insurance, and this odd residence requirement of having someone vouch for me and be responsible financially during my migration process.

Bob K

Welcome tot the forum.  Lots of good info here for you to read and ask away!  I will try to answer your questions in the other threads you post as this one is for introductions.  So again welcome.

Bob K

I second that welcome. I am in Santo Domingo and happy to help with info.

Much of what you are looking for is in the various threads. Read read read!

the tinker40

Sorry, but I'm of no use to you. I live in Sosua, a small town on the North shore of the Dominican Republic. I have a Canadian friend, but I don't think she lives near you. I'll check. Good luck & welcome to this site. I hope that someone here can help you.

Bob K

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good folks and good info here.  Read  the various threads on living in the DR and ask questions.
I to am on the north coast in the Sousa/Cabaret area so I don't have much info on the PC area.

Welcome to the forums.  Honey lots of expats in Punta Cana, just need to find out where they hang out.  Usually coffee shops,  restaurants and  bars!
