Best Online Maltese Language Courses?

Post new topic

sjones581

Hi,

I'm new to the site. American, retired and can't imagine moving to a country without at least extending the courtesy of learning the native tongue. Even in a country where English is commonly spoken.

So what's the best online Maltese language course available? The basics  are fine. I'll take immersive and classroom courses once I relocate to Malta (6 months to 9 months). I'm retired, lots of free time for that sort of thing!

Thanks in advance,
Steve

That's what I hear...Try Icelandic If you want a hard language to learn. It's outrageous. I hope Maltese isn't as difficult.

i don't think any online course would be very helpful.  but i have learned a bit of it trying to help my kids learn over the last three, four months.  i cannot pronounce anything but i have passable elementary reading knowledge after using the following three online resources.

1) this is a good reliable dictionary.  there are erroneous entries.  they are marked so watch out for them.

2) google translate helps a lot, if not perfectly.

3) this is a type of meta translating site.  it's helpful.

you might start by taking the past exams from this site.
http://curriculum.gov.mt/en/Examination … fault.aspx

they contain the annual exams for primary and secondary schools.  look for maltese exams.  then you should translate them.  it is a tedious and laborious process but after about 40 hours of doing it, you will have some working knowledge of maltese.

it is tricky looking up words in maltese because they have suffixes and prefixes for personal pronouns and prepositions that dictionaries cannot parse.

it might help to join a facebook group for learning maltese.

good luck.
