Retiring in Colombia

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Why did you choose to retire in Colombia? What are the advantages compared with your home country?

What were your main considerations when deciding to move? For example, taxes, ease of transferring your pension, etc..

Are there any specific formalities you had to go through as a retiree moving to Colombia (for example, is there a particular retirement visa)?

What is Colombia's healthcare like? Have you had any good or bad experiences dealing with healthcare professionals?

Do you have any tips for other retirees in Colombia?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

I initially retired in Colombia with the intention of obtaining a Marriage Visa as I am Married to a Colombian Woman.  It was then that I was looking at having to pay between 36K and 12K a year for taxes on my US pension.  For this reason I reside in Colombia for only 183 days a year.  My wife are exploring options with Ecuador as I heard that they don't try to tax your American Pension.

Mark you must have one hell of a pension where you'd have to pay 30k in taxes! I don't have ur issue. I've got my insurance through Sura which also covers vision and dental. Only thing I've ever used it for is having my teeth cleaned though. We have great healthcare here around rionegro with lots of doctors and hospitals. Can't speak on healthcare other places. I did get about vaccinated at a private clinic though...everything from hep A and B, tetanus, yellow fever, flu, pneumonia, and a couple more. But no line and way less than $100 USD for all. I've got many friends here who've had all diff kinds of surgery eg cataract, shoulder and knee, etc and very satisfied. The paperwork/ bureaucracy kind of a pain but the medical care is good. Biggest prob for me is having to prove my income from my state pension every year and having to get it appostillized by the Sec of State -in my case Florida. And now they have a new rule at the migration office in Medellin that you have to go in there by yourself. In the past I always paid one of my Colombian friends go there with me to help me translate...since mi espanol is so bad.
