Extending a 4-month Visa

If self-sufficient retirees from USA reside in Portugal for the four months allowed, can they then go to another Schengen-regulated country for 90 days? We'd like to live there for up to nine months, but it looks like getting visas for that long would be a problem. Living in Portugal for 4 months and Spain for 3 months would be okay.

Only 3 months (90 days) within each 180 days is permitted Visa-free for USA citizens, and that refers to the entire Schengen zone, not just Portugal.  So you cannot go to Spain on the 91st day.

Ok. That's what I figured. I guess we'll look into applying for a residency visa in Portugal. I read that it's possible if you have enough time -- and money.
Thanks for the quick reply.
