Hotels and valid Vietnamese driving license?

Normally when you check in to hotel you give your passport to them to copy, I wonder can I substitute that with valid driving license?

i think theyd need ur passport no and visa but then ive used 20 year old passports etc before.........

Short term its ok, overnight they will want your passport number. Just photocopy your passport details.

A TRC has your passport number, that's why they accept them.

UPDATE: my 4 star hotel in Saigon did ask my passport and I just gave my driving license and no questions was asked.
