Hi, has anyone managed to get either the Skypass credit card or the green American express card from BOV? If yes, can you kindly share what you were asked to do please? Thanks :)

I was told if I wanted either they would block EUR 5,000 in my account in return for EUR 5,000 credit limit

Banif (BNF) and APS both have a similar position on credit cards, they want the same amount of credit they allow on the card to be deposited into an account which can't be touched. So it is a credit card in name only!

I have an actual proper CC from HSBC, but I also have a home loan with them so I guess they have enough collateral :)

If i was to block the sum of money, would it be easy to get it back? Thanks!

Pretty safe to assume you would get that money back when you closed the credit card down and paid off any outstanding funds owed.

I`ve heard the Insignia credit card is good

Last time I checked, they would not accept pensioners only employed persons!

That must be frustrating, Ray. I`ve heard good things about Insignia
from those able to get the card.

I have been with BOV 5 years with an Aus pension every 4 weeks and several 1000's invested in their funds  yet they will Not give me a credit card without withholding money ,which is NO credit card at all but a prepaid card.

I wanted to transfer my Amex platinum card to a Maltese one - absolutely no luck with Bov who told me to get in touch with Amex. I had the discussion with Amex who told me to get in touch with Amex Malta. I can't get an address for Amex Malta.

Anyway, I had the discussion about the Bov credit card. For a €3000 credit on a standard card, they block €5000 and for a gold card and €7000 credit they block €9000 euro. Apparently all Maltese banks are the same (it is a good job that I set up my bank account in 1992!). It is not a proper credit card as the UK would know it.

The problem is that having sold my UK property, I am cash rich but hire car companies ask for a credit card. Most won't accept a debit card or Amex! I have still kept my UK Nationwide credit card but it has a comparatively low limit as I don't use it.

If you contact Indigo car hire they can arrange car hire in most countries without a credit card, you can use your debit card.

They booked a car for me at Gatwick Airport with Avis, who I have used dozens of times in the UK when we lived there, and on arrival Avis said they didn't care what card it was and did not ring fence a deposit to cover the excess either.

I got a HSBC Malta credit card. No blocks or anything stupid like other Maltese banks. They do have my mortgage though.

Try HSBC expat they do Amex to people living abroad and while they require a substantial balance as you say you are cash rich. I wouldn’t bring large sums to Malta anyway :)
