Dual citizenship UK/Swiss for son of Swiss mother

Post new topic

Hampshire girl

I have read on various web sites that Swiss citizenship, if born to a Swiss mother, is automatic. My husband's Swiss mother has lived in the UK for the past 50 years or so, her first 30 years were in Switzerland.  I then read that the child must have been registered before the age of 22.  My husband remembers that his mother wanted to register him when he was younger but he could, at that time see no reason for this.  He is now 50 and would really like the opportunity to take up UK/Swiss citizenship.  He has never lived in Switzerland but used to spend every summer there as a child/teenager.  He currently lives in the UK.

Is this possible?  If not, would his status of having a Swiss mother help with an application if he were to move to Switzerland in the future?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Your understanding is correct; if your husband's mother did not register his birth with the Swiss authorities by the time he was aged 22, then he has lost the right to Swiss Citizenship.
