Anyone currently living in Ecuador? I'm seeing conflicting reports about crime and safety. IL says it's safe to live there and the reports put out by the US Government beg to differ with crime against outsiders on the rise including violent crime and rapes. We would like to come and check it out for ourselves but not sure which report is accurate. I'd like to hear both the good and bad. Thanks.

It's been written enough on safety in this forum, including my posts. I'll break it down for you... It is possible to live here and never get in trouble, but...:
1) Police is not serving nor protecting anybody. Unless they witness the crime, don't even bother to call. Your safety is in your own hands.
2) Extreme poverty of the majority of the population pushes people to take shots even if few dollars is a possible bounty.
Good news:
A) Ecuadorians are essentially non-violent. So, if you happen to get attacked, don't resist and you'll be ok.
B) Most attacks are very easy to prevent. Look at #2, those are 99% of your potential attackers: uneducated, hungry, unsophisticated, desperate, absolutely unable to elaborate any kind of more or less complex robbery plan... Just pay attention to your surroundings, more than in US.
