I have moved to the Netherlands and taken up a part-time job. I am actually retired and have pensions from the UK and Germany as well as some 'unearned' income from the UK.

I could really use advice on how to go about tax returns.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

I'm assuming that you are a UK expat living (and working) in Holland.  When you entered Holland, you registered with the Gemeente and received a BSN number?

Tax returns in Holland are required from everybody; the first years' return has to be done the old-fashioned paper way, after that, you can do them online.  The Dutch tax-year runs from Jan > Dec, so if for example, you moved to Holland In December 2017, they (the Belastingdienst) will ask you for copies of all tax documentation P40, P11D etc, so you'll need your UK tax documentation for the UK FY 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, plus copies of all bank statements for that period.  All income will have to be explained.

There is a double-taxation agreement in place between UK/NL; what that means is you won't be taxed twice on income received in these countries; where you'll come unstuck is that Holland has 2 sorts of tax - income tax and social security tax.  The agreement only applies to income tax, so they still tax you on all income received (world-wide) for social taxes; the social taxes are for Pension (AOW), Widows/Widower (AnW) and Long-time care.  These charges will apply for the whole tax year they are assessing.  If you are genuinely over pensionable age (66), then you shouldn't be charged the AoW element.

My advice (after what I went through), is to find a tax-consultant who has experience of dealing with income from overseas (not all do).  Your information says you live in Amsterdam; I've done a Google search for tax consultants in that area; this link will take you there.  I don't recommend any of them; they are all in Dutch, but I would expect them to speak English if you phone them.

Hope this helps.
