How to discover the cultural scene in Turkey

Post new topic

Hello,

Moving to a new place and learning about the culture goes beyond adapting to customs and traditions. The art scene (music, art, literature, and cinematography) is also a big part of discovering a new country.

What are the best ways to learn about the cultural scene in Turkey, and how important are the arts in the country?

Did you do a lot of research prior to moving, or was it easy to explore the art scene after your move?

How would you explain the art scene in Turkey? What is the most salient art form in the country, that you would recommend for future expats to explore in order to adapt and integrate faster: literature, cinematography, music, etc.?

Which art form and artist most represent the country's culture, and why?

Are there certain activities or places such as art centres that would help to explore the culture in Turkey?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

The most amazing attractions in istanbul are 500 years old mosques and my favorite is Süleymaniye mosque which is one of the masterpiece of Architect Sinan and his greatest masterpiece is Selimiye mosque in Edirne. Well, Süleymaniye has really great acustic design which allows the sound transmission from mihrab (altar) to entrance door about 50m without any speaker originally because there were no electricity 500 years ago. Even a small knock sound at mihrab where imam leads the prayer and recites Quran, reaches every corner in the mosque through the dome! There are a lot more about this mosque such as ostrich egg hanging at chandeliers as an organic mosquito & spider combat devices!! I like Rüstempasha (son in law of Suleyman, husband of Mihrimah) mosque es well which is in Eminonu area outstands with its greatest blue tiles and made also by Sinan. Another of this art is in Üsküdar Şemsipasha mosque and  this is really interesting because it is named later as Kuşkonmaz (no bird standing) mosque because the original sponsor asked him to make a mosque bird should not shit! Then after a long research he found this place a corner of Bosphorus with water/air turbulance where no birds like to go!!! There are a lot more to discover in istanbul and i am showing around people who is interested.
