Hello,

Legal services can be a headache when you don't have the relevant and necessary information, especially upon moving to a new country. Please share some tips regarding legal services in Germany.

What types of legal services might an expat need in Germany?

Are legal services easily accessible?

What are the best ways to go about finding a professional for your legal needs in Germany? (e.g. online, yellow pages, word of mouth)?

What are the most affordable options for legal services (private, public, etc.)? Is there a range regarding fees?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Legal advice and services are highly regulated in Germany. Basically, only certified lawyers are allowed to do this - and they must charge fees stipulated by law.
This means, there is no free legal advice in Germany (a first consultation costs a flat fee of €180-250). And lawyers compete only on quality, not price. They also cannot advertise freely.
For those who cannot afford legal representation, it is possible to get a "Beratungsschein" from the authorities, who then cover the costs.
As in any country, it is far better to not need legal services!
