Vietnam Airlines is scheduled to begin flights connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh from December 30, 2018.

The national carrier will operate regular flights on the route, with a frequency of one flight daily using Airbus A321 aircraft. Departure from Ho Chi Minh City is at 14:00 and from Van Don at 16:45, with an expected flight time of 2 hours 5 minutes.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Van Don route will help strengthen the connection between Vietnam’s southern and northeastern regions, meeting the demand for tourism and trade between Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest financial and economic center, and Quang Ninh and other nearby provinces. At the same time it is expected to intercept an increasing demand for goods transportation in the future, when Van Don officially becomes a special economic zone.

About Van Don International Airport:

Van Don International Airport is located in Doan Ket town, Van Don district of Quang Ninh province, in the northern key economic zone, right in the triangle of Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. With a strategic location, the airport plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Quang Ninh province in particular and the northeastern region in general.

After three years of construction, the Van Don airport is now approaching completion before becoming operational on December 30, 2018. With an investment of 7.5 trillion dong (USD 322 million), the airport (will) welcome 500,000 visitors in its first year of operation. The design capacity is 2.5 million passengers per year, which (will) be doubled by 2030.

It will be a real treat to have a fast route to Vinh Ha Long. We rented a car & driver in 1999 for a trip from Hanoi to Vinh Ha Long and it was a real pain in the rear. The roads were rough as a cob. I don't see how a driver could make any money. Any profit from the fare would go right back into the suspension.

Not anymore, Jim-Minh.  We took my grandniece there in Oct; it was less than 2 hours on expressway.

With 120 km/h maximum speed on CT 04 Hà Nội - Hải Phòng, it took us a bit over an hour to cover the 105 km distance.  Then another 25 km on CT 09 Hải Phòng - Hạ Long including the brand new Bạch Đằng Bridge (aka Cầu Ba Chữ H / 3 Hs Bridge).  This expressway is narrower so maximum speed is only 80 km/h.

Pretty smooth ride.
