Just getting started-Seeking advice on best places to live in Portugal

Hello All!
I just joined expat with the intent of exploring some options. I intend to visit Portugal this summer to explore the region of Algarve for potential future relocation from the US. I've read in a few sources that Portugal is a great place to retire!

For my trip this summer, so far my itinerary includes exploring Lisbon, then taking the train to Algarve with stays in Faro, Loule, and Portimao. I may have a bit of a tourist mindset yet, because I really do want to go to the market in Loule (scheduling my stay there to be over a weekend for the big market day on Sat), see the castle in Silves (day trip out of Portimao), and head to the beach from Loule and/or Portimao. I am not getting a car, so much of my planning was based on train and bus schedules and proximity to city center.

After living and commuting in a big city for many years, I'm looking forward to a smaller friendly community, with a less hurried lifestyle. Faro seems like a great option because of easy access to the Rail and bus.

Any thoughts or input on best places to live and how to visit Portugal for a short time to get the best feel for living there?

We have just moved over to Portugal in the last two months from Ireland and like you we started visiting places we knew from our holidays in the past but we have ended up buying a property in Olhao which is nearer to the Spanish border and is a fishing community with big redevelopment plans for its Marina also up this way is Tavira which too is very lovely and not very touristy ... neither of these have beaches but have a ferry that runs to the islands where the beaches are beautiful.

So come this way too after you visit Faro.
